Re: World's Ocean Temps Warmest Recorded by NCDC

Changes In Net Flow Of Ocean Heat Correlate With Past Climate Anomalies

August 14 2009

QUOTE: their data shows the oceans are not continuously warming-a conclusion not
consistent with the idea that the oceans may be harboring "warming in the
pipeline." Douglass further notes that the team found no correlation between the
shifts and atmospheric CO2 concentration.

Physicists at the University of Rochester have combed through data from
satellites and ocean buoys and found evidence that in the last 50 years, the net
flow of heat into and out of the oceans has changed direction three times.

These shifts in the balance of heat absorbed from the sun and radiated from the
oceans correlate well with past anomalies that have been associated with abrupt
shifts in the earth’s climate, say the researchers.

These anomalies include changes in normal storm intensities, unusual land
temperatures, and a large drop in salmon populations along the western United
States.

The physicists also say these changes in ocean heat-flow direction should be
taken into account when predicting global climate because the oceans represent
90 percent of the total heat in the earth’s climate system.

The study, which will appear in an upcoming issue of Physics Letters A, differs
from most previous studies in two ways, the researchers say. First, the
physicists look at the overall heat content of the Earth’s climate system,
measuring the net balance of radiation from both the sun and Earth. And second,
it analyzes more completely the data sets the researchers believe are of the
highest quality, and not those that are less robust.

"These shifts happened relatively abruptly," says David Douglass, professor of
physics at the University of Rochester, and co-author of the paper. "One, for
example, happened between 1976 and 1977, right when a number of other
climate-related phenomenona were happening, such as significant changes in US
precipitation."

Douglass says the last oceanic shift occurred about 10 years ago, and that the
oceans are currently emitting slightly more radiation than they are receiving.

The members of the team, which includes Robert Knox, emeritus professor of
physics at the University, believe these heat-flux shifts had previously gone
unnoticed because no one had analyzed the data as thoroughly as the Rochester
team has.

The team believes that the oceans may change how much they absorb and radiate
depending on factors such as shifts in ocean currents that might change how the
deep water and surface waters exchange heat.

In addition to the correlation with strange global effects that some scientists
suspect were caused by climate shifts, the team says their data shows the oceans
are not continuously warming-a conclusion not consistent with the idea that the
oceans may be harboring "warming in the pipeline." Douglass further notes that
the team found no correlation between the shifts and atmospheric CO2
concentration.

"An interesting aspect of this research is that no reference to the surface
temperature itself is needed," says Knox. "The heat content data we used,
gathered by oceanographers, was gleaned from temperature measurements at various
ocean depths up to 750 meters." The team also found that the radiative imbalance
was sufficiently small that it was necessary to consider the effect of
geothermal heating. Knox believes this is the first time this additional source
of heat has been accounted for in such a model.

The team notes that it’s impossible to predict when another shift might occur,
but they suspect future shifts might be similar to the three observed.

Both Douglass and Knox are continuing to analyze various climate-related data to
find any new information or correlations that may have so far gone unnoticed.

Heating Beat-Up Has Echoes Of Y2K

August 18 2009

QUOTE: there is a certain political impotence in accepting that global warming
could be part of a naturally occurring phenomenon.

REMEMBER Y2K?

This was the new millennium bug that we were told threatened to throw the
world’s computer systems into chaos as we entered the year 2000.

Aircraft could fall from the sky and businesses crash in a global digital
catastrophe, we were warned.

Panic set in and billions of dollars were spent across the world to head off
this impending armageddon.

In this mad rush there was no room for sceptics.

The evidence of the looming danger was overwhelming and undeniable, regardless
of the fact that it sounded like something out of a science-fiction movie.

Action had to be taken and no price was too high.

Well, the tsunami turned out to be nothing more than a ripple in a pond, if
that.

Does all this have a familiar ring to it?

Of course.

It is the same type of argument that is being foisted on us by the KRudd
government over global warming and its threat to the future of civilisation as
we know it.

Think about it.

The blame for any disaster caused by the fanciful Y2K bug had to rest with
mankind’s development of digital technology.

And mankind is back in the blame game, this time responsible for global warming.

Remember, it was not so long ago that we were confronted with the unnerving
prospect of being fried like eggs on a hotplate as a result of a widening hole
in the ozone layer of the atmosphere.

The hole is apparently still there, although it has stopped expanding and has,
in fact, started shrinking. Coincidentally, it is now playing second fiddle to
global warming in the climate change debate.

But just as we were told to disregard any suggestion that a hole in the ozone
layer could be, in large part anyway, caused by Earth’s natural evolution, so we
must accept that global warming cannot be attributed to any natural changes in
the planet’s climactic cycle.

No. It is all our fault.

The reason the government has taken this view is not hard to fathom. After all,
there is a certain political impotence in accepting that global warming could be
part of a naturally occurring phenomenon.

Addressing parliament last week on the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme, Greg
Combet, assisting Climate Change Minister Penny Wrong, made it quite clear that
the government would have no truck with this. "For practical purposes we can be
sure that human activities are responsible for global warming," he said.

"Publication in newspapers and blogs is no substitute for the careful processes
of scientific rigour," Combet added dismissively.

But the reality is that these and other public forums are carrying much of the
informed debate about this issue, which will have a profound economic impact on
the lives of Australians in metropolitan and regional areas of this country.

Combet makes the extraordinary statement that the government will give no
credibility to any challenge to its policy on global warming unless it is done
through major peer-reviewed scientific journals.

This would, of course, remove differing scientific opinion from the public
arena. But, in any case, why bother when he makes it clear that the government
has already made up its mind, based on thoroughly tested and verified scientific
evidence, that human-induced emissions of greenhouse gases are unequivocally
responsible for most climate warming and that this warming will continue.

Just in case anyone should accept an alternative view, he trotted out a
well-used list of catastrophic consequences flowing from this including a surge
in sea levels, bushfires, heatwaves, drought, disease, along with social and
geopolitical destabilisation.

This would be the legacy to future generations of Australians unless KRudd’s
climate change policy is accepted.

But is this just emotive scaremongering?

The fact that we need to be conscious of the dangers of pollution is obvious and
is already embraced by industry and the community at large. And just in case, it
is vigorously enforced by an ever-rising mountain of regulation.

But what KRudd is now proposing, as he climbs the ladder of international
diplomacy on global warming, is a tax not just on pollution but on jobs.

Once the harsh reality of this sinks in, together with predicted rises in
interest rates and continuing employment stress, KRudd may well find that the
climate change true believers are having second thoughts.

Gassy Gravy Train!

August 21 2009

Amazing!

For people who want us to cut emissions – like the stuff blown out the back of
their jets – the global warming alarmists descending on Copenhagen for a new
post-Kyoto deal don’t set much of an example, do they?

"The two-week conference in December is expected to attract between 12,000 and
15,000 participants."

CO2 Is The New DDT

Human Cost of Global Warming Propaganda

August 21 2009

QUOTE: "Carbon is the new DDT," McAleer said in interview.
"Environmentalists are pushing the same kind of anti-human propaganda that
triggered the ban on DDT.

QUOTE: The real threat to future livelihoods come more from global warming
policy proposals than do from any actual warming trend, McAleer suggested.

QUOTE: Moore eventually left Greenpeace in the mid 1980′s because it adopted
what he describes as an "anti-human" and an "anti-science" agenda."I don’t
believe that there is climate catastrophe," he said. "I don’t use the word
chaos or disaster to describe the present changes in climate, which are well
within natural variations that have occurred in the past history of the
earth."

Scientifically unsound claims about global warming are being used to seduce
young students and to cajole lawmakers into accepting the legitimacy of
regulatory schemes that restrict the use of fossils fuels, according to a
new documentary.

The husband-wife team of Phelim McAleer and Ann McElhinney co-produced and
directed  "Not Evil, Just Wrong" in an effort to highlight the long history
of  "anti-human propaganda" that reaches back to the scientifically
inaccurate claims made about DDT in Rachel Carson’s 1962 book "Silent
Spring."

The same alarmist rhetoric is now being used to rationalize severe limits on
CO2 emissions that could cripple modern economies, the filmmakers warn.

The documentary will premier 8 pm on October 18. The film is available for
purchase online where "Cinematic Tea Parties" are already being organized.

A special screening was held for supporters at the Americans for Tax Reform
(ATR) office in Washington D.C. Wednesday night.

"Carbon is the new DDT," McAleer said in interview. "Environmentalists are
pushing the same kind of anti-human propaganda that triggered the ban on
DDT.

Millions of children died of malaria because of this ban. The same kind of
deception is now being used to target carbon dioxide. Industries that rely
on fossil fuels could be shut down and jobs lost thanks to all of the fear
mongering and the disinformation that is not justified by science."

Americans, unlike Europeans, seem more aware and attuned to the growing body
of evidence that questions the premise of man-made global warming theories,
he added.

The documentary features a number of scientists who have identified natural
forces, as opposed to human activity, as the primary drivers of climate
change.

The real threat to future livelihoods come more from global warming policy
proposals than do from any actual warming trend, McAleer suggested.

Although the British High Court recently ruled in favor of parents who
objected to the distribution of Al Gore’s film "An Inconvenient Truth" in
the school system, its message of pending man-made climate catastrophe
continues to hold sway with students who are interviewed in"Not Evil, Just
Wrong."

John Day, the lawyer for British parents who sued the British Department of
Education over Gore’s film, discusses the court ruling in the film and
compares actual scientific estimates of climate change contained in the UN
IPCC with the assertions made in "An Inconvenient Truth."

"The judge identified nine aspects of  `An Inconvenient Truth,’ nine core
errors, where Al Gore either misstated the IPCC or prejudicially exaggerated
what they found," Day said.

"For example in relation to the sea level rises which is perhaps the
starkest error in Al Gore’s film arguably. Al Gore is giving an impression
that the sea level is going to rise by 20 feet in a very near future. The
IPCC talks about 20 feet sea level rises over millennia, over thousands of
years, thousands and thousands of years. And sea level rises by a matter of
inches by the end of the century. Now that is a very disturbing misstatement
of the science."

Contrary to what students have been taught in British schools, human
emission have little or nothing to do with melting glaciers, Syun Ichi
Akasofu, founding director of the International Arctic Research Centre at
the University of Alaska, concluded in his research.

"We have ice in the Arctic Ocean and it has been receding, but this receding
began around 1850, not the just the last 50 years," he said in the film. "It
does happen all the time because of natural phenomenon. So it is very
difficult to associate all the changes in the ice to carbon dioxide."

Patrick Moore, a founding member of Greenpeace, also appears in the
documentary and comments on the modern environmental movement. He is
particularly critical of how the news media has covered and reacted to the
concept of global warming.

"There’s a real unbalanced situation in the media, always trying to look for
the global warming connection," he said. "The fact that the Antarctic ice
sheet, the sea ice around Antarctic is growing rapidly, the fact that the
Arctic ice is not disappearing the way that we’ve been told, as a matter of
fact, it came back even larger last year, and this year it looks like it’s
going to be even more extensive, but that doesn’t get reported."

Moore eventually left Greenpeace in the mid 1980′s because it adopted what
he describes as an "anti-human" and an "anti-science" agenda."I don’t
believe that there is climate catastrophe," he said. "I don’t use the word
chaos or disaster to describe the present changes in climate, which are well
within natural variations that have occurred in the past history of the
earth."

"Not Evil, Just Wrong" also focuses attention on the impact global warming
polices have had on the most underdeveloped parts of the world.

British Lord Nigel Lawson calls out environmentalists for erecting barriers
against economic progress where it is needed most.

"The people who are calling for massive carbon dioxide reduction, the Al
Gore’s of this world, are in fact the enemies of poverty reduction," he says
in the film.

Industrialized areas of America, such as Vevey, Indiana are particularly
vulnerable to European-style regulatory schemes now making their way through
Congress, the documentary points out. The community, which is located near
the Kentucky border, greatly benefits from the availability of cheap energy
sources like coal.

Tim and Tiffany McElhany are among the Vevey residents who take part in the
documentary. They explain how the anti-industry policies now under
consideration would greatly diminish the standard of living in their
community and jeopardize economic opportunities for their children.

In June, the House passed the Waxman-Markey "cap and trade" bill, which
could come up for final approval in the fall.

"It would mean the death of American industry," McElhinney said. "We already
have the proof of how disastrous green policies can be to economies. Spain
has been held up as the poster child for renewable energy and Obama has
talked repeatedly of Spain’s green jobs.

Spain has 17.9 percent unemployment, is that what America wants?" Green jobs
are a myth – they dont exist. If you tax energy and make it more expensive
you make jobs more expensive and decrease employment. Cap and Trade is
simply a stimulus bill for Chinese power station workers."

Colleen Holmes, executive director with Eagle Forum, attended the screening
at ATR and expressed concern over  the direction of US policy."The people
who form the backbone of our nation, small business owners and hard working,
middle and lower income Americans know this policy will directly affect them
by killing jobs and increase their taxes and energy costs, yet the liberal
elites ignore their concerns and treat them with contempt," she said.  "The
film addresses that very well."

Komrade, are you saying that global temperatures can be measured to within
0.03 C?

What is the possible error in the above temperatures?

Surely nowhere near 0.1 C, let alone 0.03 C!

This would make your UHI-infested  figures above, TOTALLY MEANINGLESS!

Only friendly peers may review

What are they hiding?

August 16 2009

Claims that man is heating the world to hell are based in part on data that
the scientists won’t let others check:

"The world’s source for global temperature record admits it’s lost or
destroyed all the original data that would allow a third party to construct
a global temperature record. The destruction (or loss) of the data comes at
a convenient time for the Climatic Research Unit (CRU) in East Anglia –
permitting it to snub FoIA requests to see the data. "

"The CRU has refused to release the raw weather station data and its
processing methods for inspection – except to hand-picked academics – for
several years. Instead, it releases a processed version, in gridded form.
NASA maintains its own (GISSTEMP), but the CRU Global Climate Dataset, is
the most cited surface temperature record by the UN IPCC. So any errors in
CRU cascade around the world, and become part of "the science"."

"Professor Phil Jones, the activist-scientist who maintains the data set,
has cited various reasons for refusing to release the raw data. Most
famously, Jones told an Australian climate scientist in 2004: "

"Even if WMO agrees, I will still not pass on the data. We have 25 or so
years invested in the work. Why should I make the data available to you,
when your aim is to try and find something wrong with it."

The same stonewalling is occuring with requests for tree-ring data, used to
guess the temperatures of times when temperatures were not taken by checking
which years were good for tree growth. Mathemetician Doug Keenan explains:

"One of the world’s leading centers for tree-ring work is at Queen’s
University Belfast (QUB), in Northern Ireland. The tree-ring data that QUB
has gathered is valuable for studying the global climate during the past
7000 years: for a brief explanation of this, see here. "

"Most of the tree-ring data held by QUB was gathered decades ago; yet it has
never been published. There is a standard place on the internet to publish
such data: the International Tree-Ring Data Bank (ITRDB), which currently
holds tree-ring data from over 1500 sites around the world. QUB refuses to
publish or otherwise release most of its data, though. So I have tried to
obtain the data by applying under the UK Freedom of Information Act (FoI
Act). "

"I have submitted three separate requests for the data…..All three
requests were refused in whole, even though the university is required to
make partial fulfillment when that is practicable."

Barnaby for PM!

August 16 2009

He’s right, of course – both schemes to cut our gases are pretend fixes to a
pretend problem, sure to cause us far more pain than either can even hope to
prevent, just to set an example no one will follow:

The Nationals leader in the Senate, Barnaby Joyce, said that ”if it’s a
choice between Rudd’s scheme and Malcolm’s scheme, I will prefer the latter.

”But please don’t take that as an endorsement of the argument – they are
both full of shit.”

Maunder Minimum Will Save Planet From Whacko Carbon Taxes

Astronomers:

‘Sun’s output may decline significantly inducing another little ice age on
the Earth’

August 15 2009

Maunder Minimum will arrive in time to save planet from utterly foolish
global carbon tax’

Below is a guest essay by Statistician Dr. Richard Mackey, who authored a
2007 peer-reviewed study which found that the solar system regulates the
earth’s climate. The paper was published August 17, 2007 in the Journal of
Coastal Research –

Excerpt: "According to the findings reviewed in this paper, the variable
output of the sun, the sun’s gravitational relationship between the earth
(and the moon) and earth’s variable orbital relationship with the sun,
regulate the earth’s climate.

The processes by which the sun affects the earth show periodicities on many
time scales; each process is stochastic and immensely complex." Dr. Mackey
is featured on page 228 of U.S. Senate Report of 700 Dissenting Scientists.
